2014 – Another Furry, Fine Year At Feline Rescue! May the New Year Bring Joyful Meows to All.

How about some excitement? Feline Rescue is growing, changing, and becoming a lively presence in our community. So far, in 2014, over 500 cats from our shelter and foster programs have found forever homes. Adoptions are up 42% from last year. People have discovered cats, and they love them.

Remember Jelly Bean? Here’s his forever life, as reported by Linda, his forever human:
My boys … all have a wonderful home. … Binks, aka Jelly Bean (whose eyes are surgically shut), is doing wonderfully; he is a healthy sleek kitty and weighs about 12 pounds now. He spends his days playing with his brothers and takes many cat-naps. Always looking for toys that make noise for him. He is an excellent mouser.

Feline Rescue’s humans have been busy, too. We hired our first employee ever – Mark Fausner – as our facilities manager to oversee the upgrades, repairs, and construction at both our long-time adoption center and at our new purchase across the street at 600 Fairview Avenue North. Our foster program has begun to use its space in the new building. We are discussing, with the watershed and soil conservation districts, funding for rain gardens to reduce run-off from both properties and improve the landscapes.

Feline Rescue is becoming a community presence, engaging with other neighborhood groups to educate and entertain citizens about cats. We’ve belonged to the Midway Chamber of Commerce for several years. This year, we connected with the Hamline-Midway Coalition, the district council for our area. We worked with the Coalition to host in our parking lot the first Fairview Avenue North Friendly Streets Initiative festival. Rumble, an outreach cat, served as the greeter. Our outreach team worked with the Animal Humane Society’s outreach group in its Frogtown initiative to increase the community cats and cats living with lower-income people that received spay-neuter services. We continue our work with MN SNAP, the mobile spay-neuter team that comes to the adoption center about twice a month.

For those of you who like numbers, our Meow Match for Medical Miracles campaign brought in $44,000, up 32% from last year. Overall donations are up 26% this year. In November, GiveToTheMax day raised $29,833, up from $17,000 last year. Feline Rescue’s income is up – but – so are expenses – 31% more than last year at this time.
